The legislators have made notable strides this week following a signal from the White House that they were open to enforcing strict restrictions on asylum and greatly expanding detention and deportation efforts. This information was shared by individuals who were either involved in or informed about the discussions, and they have requested to remain anonymous due to the meetings being confidential.

The Republican members of Congress have made it a requirement to receive additional military assistance for Ukraine and funding for border operations, which are important parts of President Biden’s large national security plan. They are only willing to support this if the Democrats in Congress and the White House agree to implement restrictions on asylum and expand legal powers to deport immigrants who illegally cross the southern border of the United States.
