Mike Johnson, the House Speaker, is encouraging President Biden to take executive action regarding the situation at the southern border.
Louisiana Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson attributed the migrant crisis to President Biden, stating on Wednesday that the president holds the power to substantially decrease the unprecedented amount of border crossings without needing Congress to take action.
During an interview with “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan in Eagle Pass, Texas, Johnson stated that President Biden’s initial actions upon taking office initiated the current state of chaos.Remain in Mexico
This is one of the options.
The Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as the Remain in Mexico policy, was put into effect by the Trump administration in the beginning of 2019 to discourage migration to the border between the U.S. and Mexico. It mandated that individuals seeking asylum in the U.S. must remain in Mexico until their designated court dates.
There has been a significant decrease in the amount of immigrants being handled at the border, following a peak in arrivals during December that put a strain on resources in certain communities throughout the United States.
The White House and a group of senators from both parties are currently in talks to create a plan that would significantly alter immigration and border security regulations. These negotiations are taking place amidst Republican requests for stricter policies in return for increased aid to Ukraine.
Tune in to “Face the Nation” at 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday to see Margaret Brennan’s full interview with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
