Microsoft will be introducing a new button for PCs in its first major keyboard update in several decades.

In a major update, Microsoft has announced that it will be incorporating an artificial intelligence button onto its Windows keyboards. This marks the first significant alteration to their keyboard design in nearly 30 years.

According to a recent announcement by Microsoft’s executive vice president Yusuf Mehdi, the Copilot key will activate the company’s AI chatbot. This addition is seen as the gateway to the world of AI on PCs.

Mehdi stated that they have confidence in its ability to enable individuals to more readily engage in the AI revolution.

In the future, artificial intelligence will be seamlessly integrated into Windows, spanning from the operating system to the physical components.

According to Mehdi, this will not only make people’s computer usage easier but also enhance it, declaring 2024 as the year of the AI PC.

Some new computers that come with Windows 11 will now have a Copilot button on the keyboard. This key will also be found on certain Surface devices that are yet to be released.

Microsoft has not indicated which computer manufacturers will include the button, but they have stated that it will be present on “a number of new Windows 11 computers from our partners in the ecosystem.” On Thursday, Dell Technologies announced that the Copilot key will be featured on their latest XPS laptops.

If Copilot is unavailable or disabled on the device, pressing the key will activate Windows’ search function instead.

Microsoft compared the new button to the Windows key, which was introduced nearly 30 years ago. The new button, featuring the Copilot logo, will be located near the keyboard’s space bar. The QWERTY

The design of the modern keyboard, which is primarily used today, was created in the 1870s.
