China’s Xinjiang region, known for the detainment and “re-education” of Muslim Uyghurs, has received criticism for suppressing their cultural identity, which is viewed as a challenge to the Communist Party’s authority. However, after facing backlash, China declared that the re-education centers were closed in 2019. CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer recently went on a government-sponsored tour in Xinjiang to observe its transformation into a lively tourist destination.
