Senator Schumer is proceeding with a temporary funding bill in order to prevent a government shutdown while negotiations for spending continue.
Washington — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday he plans to move forward with a short-term measure to keep the government funded as lawmakers work to pass full-year spending bills ahead of a deadline to avert a government shutdown.
On the Senate floor, Schumer stated that a shutdown is imminent, scheduled to begin on January 19, which is approximately one week from now. He mentioned that this is in reference to the initial deadline for extending government funding. However, it has become evident that more than a week will be needed to complete the appropriations process.
agreement
Agreement was achieved by top government officials during the weekend. Yet, increasing resistance from conservative members jeopardized its likelihood of passing in the House. On Thursday, some legislators urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to withdraw from the agreement and advocate for reductions in spending.
