Israel’s border with Egypt stretches for 9 miles. Israeli authorities claim that the Philadelphi Corridor, a buffer between the two countries, has been used for smuggling weapons and supplies to Hamas, the rulers of Gaza. However, Egypt has strongly denied these allegations.
“The Gaza Strip’s southern border, also known as the Philadelphi Corridor, should be under our control. It needs to be closed,” stated Netanyahu in late December. He cautioned that Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas, initiated by their violent assault on October 7, would continue for several more months. “It is evident that any alternative plan would not guarantee the disarmament we desire.”
Diaa Rashwan, the leader of Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS), strongly criticized Netanyahu’s statement on Monday, stating that it was an effort to justify the Israeli government’s true intention of violating security agreements and occupying the border corridor between the two countries.

Rashwan cautioned that any effort by Israeli forces to take control of the corridor would result in a significant risk to the relationship between Egypt and Israel.
