State of the City address

In 2024, Mayor Eric Adams delivered the State of the City Address at the time stamp of 44:55.

“We must prioritize safeguarding our students from online harm, particularly the increasing threats posed by social media. Corporations such as TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook are contributing to a crisis in mental health with their platforms designed to be addictive and potentially hazardous. We cannot idly permit big tech to profit off of our children’s privacy and put their mental well-being at risk. Therefore, Dr. Vasan, Ashwin Vasan, has released a health commissioner advisory formally recognizing social media as a public health crisis in New York City,” stated Adams.

According to Adams, New York is leading the way as the first major city in the country to declare this statement.

“Similar to how the surgeon general addressed the dangers of tobacco and guns, we are approaching social media as a public health concern and it needs to be addressed. It is imperative that tech companies are held accountable for their products,” stated Adams.

Adams announced that additional information regarding the advisory and its consequences will be disclosed in the near future.

He stated that we will address the current issue affecting our kids.
