Hulu is implementing new measures to crack down on the common practice of sharing subscriptions among multiple users.
Hulu plans to take action against users who share their login information with others, including family members, friends, and past romantic partners. This decision follows similar actions taken by other streaming services like Netflix and Disney+.
Starting on March 14, Hulu subscribers will only be allowed to share their account login details with individuals living in the same household, according to an email sent by the company to its customers on Wednesday. This updated policy is currently in effect for all customers who signed up for Hulu on or after January 25.
Hulu stated in the email that they will be implementing restrictions for sharing your account with individuals outside of your household and outlining how they will monitor compliance with these restrictions.
Hulu and Disney+ are planning to increase their prices for streaming services once more.
Hulu aims to limit the practice of using shared subscriptions in order to increase its number of paying subscribers and generate more revenue. According to financial records from Disney, Hulu’s average monthly income from on-demand-only subscribers dropped to $12.11 in autumn, a 2% decrease from the previous quarter. The streaming service experienced a loss of approximately 100,000 on-demand subscribers during this period, bringing its total number of users to 43.9 million.
A significant number of consumers engage in password sharing, as revealed by a survey conducted by Secure Data Recovery. In fact, 69% of Americans have confessed to utilizing someone else’s streaming service account at some point.
According to a poll conducted by Reviews.org in 2023, 51% of Hulu subscribers in the United States reported sharing their login information with others. This places Hulu as the second most commonly shared streaming service, with only Netflix having a higher percentage of account holders (85%) who admit to sharing their passwords.
On Thursday afternoon, Disney’s stock was being traded at a value of $96.89, showing a slight increase of less than 1%.
