On Monday, authorities reported that two missiles were launched at a ship heading towards a port in Iran, resulting in minimal damage but no harm to the crew.
The recent assault on the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, Star Iris, operated by a Greek company, highlights the Houthis’ increasing targeting of ships passing through the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Star Iris was en route from Brazil to Bandar Khomeini in Iran, a country known for its support and arming of the Houthis in the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
Without providing evidence, the Houthis claimed that the Star Iris was an “American” ship and fired several missiles at it.
The armed forces of the United States and Britain have carried out numerous air strikes on the Houthis’ missile stockpiles and launch locations within their controlled territory.
In November, the insurgents have continuously attacked ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza. These attacks often involve ships with weak or unclear connections to Israel, posing a threat to trade in a crucial pathway for Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
