A business in the Twin Cities is aiming to be the first nonprofit LGBTQ+ bar and theater in the United States.

The LUSH Lounge & Theater, located in northeast Minneapolis, is known for hosting a variety of live performances including music, comedy, drag shows, and burlesque. The establishment revealed on Wednesday that its non-profit entity, the Lush Legacy Fund (LLF), is currently in the process of taking over ownership of the business.

“The decision to relocate is driven by our desire to support and strengthen the LGBTQ+ community and businesses in the metro area, promoting a culture of creativity and inclusivity,” explains Jennifer Lueck, owner of LUSH and board member of LLF.

According to Lueck, LUSH fosters connections by providing a lively and secure environment for friends to gather and artists to showcase their talents. It also serves as a hub for job training and entrepreneurial development. The ownership group is dedicated to reinvesting all profits into the business during this transition and has hired independent accountants who share their values of transparency and adherence to regulations.

Lueck states that the board is seeking guidance from nonprofit professionals in order to develop a strategic plan for both LUSH’s ongoing prosperity and the prosperity of its future collaborations related to the LGBTQ+ community.

The board is organizing a public meet-and-greet at LUSH on March 14. It is also welcoming applications for board members and volunteers, as well as accepting donations.
