Kenneth Mitchell, known for his role in “Star Trek,” passed away at the age of 49 after a battle with ALS.
Kenneth Mitchell, the actor famous for his role in “Star Trek,” passed away on Saturday at the age of 49, according to a statement from StarTrek.com.
Mitchell received a diagnosis of ALS, a degenerative illness, over five years ago, according to a post on his Instagram account. The statement reveals that he encountered “difficult obstacles” during that time.
“The statement stated that Ken’s true character allowed him to overcome every obstacle with poise and dedication to fully embracing each moment of his life with joy. He followed the beliefs that every day is precious and that we are always accompanied on our journey.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) impacts the nerve cells responsible for muscle movement in both the upper and lower body. The disease causes these cells to cease functioning and eventually die.
In the United States, it is estimated that there are over 30,000 individuals who have ALS. On average, about 5,000 new cases of ALS are reported in the country every year. The majority of those with ALS typically have a lifespan of two to five years after experiencing symptoms.

On August 10th, the actor posted on Instagram about their experience of living with ALS.
“It has been a challenging five years, filled with both losses and gains. There were difficult times, but also many blessings,” he expressed. “Throughout it all, the support of friends, family, caregivers, and doctors has been unwavering and greatly appreciated.”
In an interview with PEOPLE in 2020, Mitchell publicly discussed his diagnoses for the first time.
When they informed us it was ALS, it felt as though I was in a personal film,” Mitchell shared with PEOPLE. “It was like watching the scene in a movie where someone is being informed of their terminal illness. I couldn’t believe it, I was completely shocked.”
After receiving his diagnosis, Mitchell went on to appear in various roles.
According to StarTrek.com, he portrayed the characters Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik of the Klingon species, as well as Aurellio, in “Star Trek: Discovery.” Additionally, he provided the voices for multiple characters in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”
Mitchell gained recognition for his contributions to the television shows “Jericho” and “The Astronaut Wives Club,” as well as his performances in “Miracle” and “Captain Marvel.”
The Instagram post announcing Mitchell’s passing described him as a dreamer, adventurer, feline enthusiast, and most importantly, a devoted father.
According to StarTrek.com, Mitchell requested that any presents be designated for ALS research or for the benefit of his two children. He is survived by his parents and wife.
