A teenager was taken into custody following the discovery of four children and two adults deceased at a Canadian residence. The incident has been deemed a “tragic and complex investigation.”

On Thursday, authorities in Ottawa announced that a 19-year-old male suspect was taken into custody in connection with the deaths of two adults and four children at a residence in the southern area of the Canadian capital. The incident has been described as a “devastating and intricate investigation” by police.

Ottawa Police stated on Thursday that Febrio Dezoysa, a 19-year-old, has been accused of one count of attempted murder and six counts of first-degree murder. It was reported that Dezoysa is a Sri Lankan citizen residing in Canada as a student.

On Thursday, Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs revealed that the weapon believed to have been used in the killings had been discovered by investigators.

There is no ongoing danger to the safety of the public.

Earlier, Stubbs informed nearby radio stations that the police do not suspect the deaths were caused by domestic or intimate partner violence. Nevertheless, they are currently investigating the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

Stubbs described the situation as “extremely tragic.”

Don Perera, a resident in the neighborhood, shared that he got acquainted with the householders during a Halloween gathering at the Catholic elementary school nearby, last autumn. According to him, the patriarch of the family hailed from Sri Lanka.

Shanti Ramesh, who resides in the nearby area, was informed of a disturbance on Wednesday night. She observed a man causing a disruption from her balcony as two law enforcement officers approached and escorted him away.

Five police cars were visibly stationed on the street and in driveways near the residence, which is a middle unit in a row of townhouses made of bricks.

A group of individuals dressed in white jumpsuits were seen entering and exiting the residence during the early hours, while families with children passed by on foot and bicycle on their route to a nearby elementary school.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe of Ottawa described the event as “one of the most disturbing acts of violence in the history of our city.”

“I am deeply upset by the news of the multiple killings in Barrhaven, a truly startling display of violence in our city’s past,” stated Sutcliffe in a message on a social platform. “While we take pride in living in a secure neighborhood, this is troubling news for all of Ottawa’s inhabitants.”

The authorities are requesting any surveillance, doorbell, or dashcam recordings from anyone present in the vicinity during the time of the event.
