Senator Bernie Sanders: “Stop funding Prime Minister Netanyahu’s military to perpetuate violence against Palestinian children.”
Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, stated on Sunday that the current administration must communicate to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel that in order to continue receiving aid from the United States, Israel must revamp its approach towards providing humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Sanders stated on “Face the Nation” on Sunday that there should be no further funding for Netanyahu’s military actions that result in the death of innocent Palestinian children.
The individual who has long been an opponent of Netanyahu is part of a set of legislators who have contended that Israel is breaching the Foreign Assistance Act by preventing American humanitarian assistance to Gaza. On Sunday, he expressed his belief that halting or attaching conditions to aid for Israel would be the appropriate course of action.
Sanders addressed the dire situation in Gaza, describing it as an unprecedented crisis where numerous children are at risk of starvation. He emphasized the common desire for children in Gaza to not suffer from starvation, regardless of political beliefs. Sanders stressed the urgency of feeding the children and urged for a ceasefire as soon as possible to allow for humanitarian aid to be delivered.
A six-week truce was proposed to align with the start of the month of daylight fasting. However, the chances of this happening seem slim as the negotiations have reached an impasse.
The attitude of the White House towards Netanyahu seems to have become more firm in the past few weeks, amidst mounting political pressure. Recently, Mr. Biden was caught on a live microphone after the State of the Union, expressing the need for a serious conversation with the Israeli prime minister about allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The progressive community has expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Biden administration is dealing with the Israel-Hamas conflict. They have been organizing campaigns nationwide to vote “uncommitted” in order to convey their dwindling support for the president during his reelection campaign. However, despite losing some of the support from progressives, who are a key part of Sanders’ supporters, the independent representative from Vermont has presented a distinct decision between Mr. Biden and the expected Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.
According to Sanders, those who acknowledge the reality of climate change and support women’s reproductive rights should vote for President Biden. He also addressed issues such as tax breaks for the wealthy, prescription drug costs, and the democratic process.
He stated that the struggle to modify Biden’s stance on Gaza persists. However, the difference between Biden and Trump is stark.
