A Japanese high court declared on Thursday that it is unconstitutional to prohibit same-sex marriage, and urged the government to quickly take action in remedying the absence of a law permitting these unions.
The court lacks the authority to reverse the existing marriage legislation, which states that marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman. Unless the current law is amended to include LGBTQ+ couples or a new law is passed allowing for different types of partnerships, government agencies are permitted to deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.

For years, a strong minority in Japan’s legislature on the conservative side has successfully prevented significant alterations to the nation’s marriage legislation.
