In a conversation with CBS News on Thursday, Border Patrol leader Jason Owens stated that the U.S. needs to enforce stricter immigration measures, such as detaining migrants, in order to discourage illegal crossings along the southern border.

Owens expressed his belief in the importance of examining and potentially revising the asylum laws to restrict eligibility to those with valid claims. This statement was made during his initial English interview since becoming the head of Border Patrol in June 2023. He also emphasized the need to enforce existing immigration laws and hold individuals responsible for any violations.

When asked about harsher national regulations, Owens confirmed, “Yes.”

A Texas law, known as SB4, permits the arrest, detention, and legal action against immigrants by state and local authorities in Texas. The Biden administration has objected to this law and a federal appeals court has once again paused its enforcement this week.

Owens claimed that the legislation will not hinder their ability to perform their duties, and emphasized the important partnership between the Border Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I have been collaborating with that agency for as long as I can remember and I don’t think that will ever change, stated Owens. They have consistently supported our goals and objectives, and we do the same for them. Despite any changes in laws they may be enforcing, our purpose remains consistent. The agency’s purpose also remains steadfast.
