Wisconsin Representative Mike Gallagher will step down early, resulting in a very narrow majority for the GOP.

Rep. Mike Gallagher from Wisconsin has declared that he will resign in April, further reducing the already small Republican majority in the House.

Gallagher, the representative of Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District, announced his decision to leave Congress on April 19, instead of waiting until January to finish his term. This will limit the number of votes Republicans can afford to lose, as all Democrats must remain united.

“I have collaborated with leaders from the House Republican Party to develop a schedule for this process, and I am eager to witness Speaker Johnson’s selection of a new chair to fulfill the significant duties of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party,” he said in a statement.

Ken Buck, a Republican from Colorado, is stepping down Friday.

Steve Scalise, the Republican House Majority Leader from Louisiana, downplayed worries about their slim majority, stating that it would be a difficult but not significantly different situation than with a slightly larger margin. He also emphasized the need for unity within his party.

He stated that in order to achieve progress, collaboration and unity are essential.

Gallagher made his decision not to seek reelection in February following backlash for defying his party and voting against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In regards to the impeachment, Gallagher…said

Gallagher serves as the head of the House Select Committee on China, known for its nonpartisan efforts.
