Biden will hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on November 15th in the San Francisco Bay Area.
On Friday, the White House announced that President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a meeting on November 15th in the San Francisco Bay area. The main objectives of the meeting include reestablishing vital military communication channels, handling competitive matters, and addressing security concerns.
Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, stated that President Biden and Xi will engage in discussions regarding topics related to the relationship between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China, the significance of maintaining transparent communication, and various global and regional matters.
Following their last meeting
Jean-Pierre stated that during their meeting in Bali, Indonesia in November 2022, they will address the responsible management of competition between the United States and China. They will also collaborate on areas where their interests align, specifically on transnational issues that impact the global community.
In August 2022, Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.
According to U.S. officials, Mr. Biden is committed to taking actions to repair important communication channels, but the Chinese are hesitant to do so.
American officials have repeatedly emphasized the need to resume this conversation in almost every discussion with their Chinese counterparts over the past year, but have been unsuccessful.
One issue causing a delay in the reestablishment of communication between military organizations is the topic of Chinese spy balloon
The military silence is often brought up in discussions due to a U.S. fighter jet shooting down an aircraft in February, according to an official.
“The event involving the balloon highlighted the challenges we faced in establishing important and impactful communication with Beijing at that time. We have been continuously and consistently advocating for this,” stated the official.
President Biden and the United States will also discuss various contentious issues with China on an international and regional level.
One of the officials stated that Mr. Biden is anticipated to emphasize the importance of Iran not causing conflict or extending violence in the Middle East due to China’s growing connection with the country. The official also mentioned that the United States is ready to promptly respond if Iran engages in any provocative actions.
Both the United States and Taiwan will be conducting presidential elections in the upcoming year, prompting caution from a government spokesperson who stated that this could result in a turbulent year. According to a senior official, the U.S. is likely to express worry over the increased military actions near Taiwan, with the current level of aggression being described as unprecedented, hazardous, and provocative.
The president and his team intend to tackle several issues, including Chinese-produced fentanyl, artificial intelligence, and incarcerated Americans in China. They are also anticipated to caution China against engaging in election meddling in the upcoming U.S. elections.
The U.S. officials stated that during their discussions on various topics, they will be evaluating if China is genuinely interested in improving their relationship with the U.S., or if their upcoming diplomatic actions are primarily for their own short-term strategic purposes.
“We will thoroughly examine and clarify those assumptions,” stated the official.
Xi is expected to officially declare on Friday that he will be present at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco the following week. This event will provide the setting for the meeting between Biden and Xi.
Mr. Biden frequently notes his personal relationship with Xi, forged over 12 years now, after the two men met when both were vice presidents.
