Rates of strokes and stroke-related mortality are disproportionately higher among the Black population in the United States compared to all other racial groups.

The ASA states that the exact reasons for the heightened risk of stroke in Black individuals are not fully understood. However, there is a greater prevalence of risk factors and societal obstacles that may contribute to the development of stroke in Black Americans. The ongoing experience of racism leads to consistent discrimination, stress, and depression, which negatively affect the health of Black individuals.

The American Stroke Association reports that hypertension, being overweight, having diabetes, elevated cholesterol levels, and smoking are all risk factors for strokes in the Black American population.

According to Dr. Dre, the powerful event “certainly makes you value being alive… It’s unbelievable to think that I had no say in it. It’s just something that could happen unexpectedly.”
