Author Percival Everett has utilized satire in his novels, such as “Erasure” which was the basis for the the award-winning movie “American Fiction,” to challenge the divide of race. In his newest work, “James,” Everett provides a retelling of “Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of Jim, Huck’s enslaved companion. For Jim, language serves as a barrier and a means to attain liberty. In an interview with correspondent Martha Teichner, Everett discusses his writing, his art, and his preference for privacy.
