Taraji P. Henson discusses her path in Hollywood and her role as Shug Avery in the film adaptation of “The Color Purple.”
Taraji P. Henson is known in Hollywood for playing compelling roles in movies like “Hidden Figures” and “Baby Boy,” but she’s venturing into new territory playing blues singer Shug Avery in a remake of the film, “The Color Purple.”
Henson, a former student of Howard University and experienced in musical theater, expressed her surprise at the physical demands of the role. She had to combine singing, dancing, and acting to portray the character.
Henson did not avoid the challenges of portraying the character, which involved numerous scenes of climbing tables. Oprah Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 1985 movie adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and is a producer for the current film, closely monitored these scenes.
