According to reports, historical documents reveal that President Biden’s great-great-grandfather was granted clemency after a late-night altercation during the Civil War. The recently uncovered court-martial records, which are housed in the U.S. National Archives, describe the incident between Moses J. Robinette and John J. Alexander on March 21, 1864, connecting the two presidents through their family history.

Robinette faced allegations of attempted murder following a scuffle at the Army of the Potomac’s winter encampment in Virginia. This occurred after Alexander overheard Robinette making negative remarks about him to a cook, prompting Alexander to quickly confront him.

According to the documents, a physical altercation occurred between the two men and Robinette pulled out his pocketknife, resulting in Alexander sustaining multiple cuts before others stepped in.

Mr. Biden’s full name is Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. He is one of 10 other commanders in chief named after their fathers. Like his father, Mr. Biden inherited his middle name from his great-grandfather, George Hamilton Robinette, according to the Larimer County Genealogical Society.

According to the society, Moses Robinette passed away in 1903.
