According to the Pentagon, it will take 60 days to construct a maritime pathway for providing assistance to Gaza, and it will involve 1,000 troops from the United States.
According to Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon Press Secretary, approximately 1,000 American troops will be required to establish a temporary sea route in order to deliver aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip. These forces will not have a physical presence in Gaza, but will assist in constructing a pier and causeway for aid transportation.
Ryder stated during a press conference that this is a strategic move by the United States. The president believes that insufficient assistance is being provided, thus this capability will be utilized and carried out.
According to Ryder, the corridor will be built in approximately 60 days and will have the capacity to distribute around two million meals per day.
The United States started delivering aid to Gaza via military planes by airdrop.
Ryder reports that the U.S. has distributed approximately 124,000 meals in the four previous rounds of airdrops. However, this is insufficient to address the estimated half a million residents of Gaza who are suffering from malnutrition as reported by the U.N.
The Biden administration is utilizing maritime passage and airdrops as a strategy to increase the delivery of aid. While convoys of trucks are the optimal method for aid distribution, limited access through checkpoints in southern Gaza has hindered this process for several months.
