Alejandro Mayorkas has been impeached by the House. Here is what will occur next.
Washington — The House
I voted in favor of impeaching Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
On Tuesday, a historic vote was held which resulted in the impeachment of a Cabinet secretary for the first time in almost 150 years.
On Tuesday, House Republicans voted to remove Mayorkas from his position due to two articles of impeachment. These articles accuse him of deliberately and consistently disregarding the law and betraying the public’s trust. This decision was made after an unsuccessful attempt last week.
However, it is highly unlikely that the impeachment attempt will succeed in the Senate, as it holds the ultimate authority in removing officials according to the Constitution.
