Coco Gauff suffered a defeat in the semifinals of the Australian Open at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka.
Coco Gauff, an American tennis player, has been eliminated from the Australian Open. She was defeated in the semifinal on Thursday night by current champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-4. This is Gauff’s first loss of the year.
Sabalenka, the second seed, will face off against China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final on Saturday at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Zheng defeated Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska on Thursday to secure her spot in the final.
Sabalenka is the first woman to reach back-to-back finals at the Australian Open since Serena Williams did it in 2016 and 2017.
She achieved her first Grand Slam victory.
Although she lost, Gauff expressed her pride in her performance in Melbourne, even suggesting it may have been better than her performance in New York.
During the press conference, 19-year-old Gauff stated that she had opportunities in both sets, but her opponent played better. She believed she executed her game plan to the best of her abilities and attributed the loss to a few crucial points.
Gauff mentioned that she had a slightly more aggressive playing style this time around.
