An attack on a military base in northeast Jordan on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three U.S. troops. A militia supported by Iran, located in Iraq, claimed responsibility for four separate attacks in the same vicinity.
During a press briefing on Monday, Nasser Kanaani, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated that regional resistance groups do not follow orders from Iran and that Iran does not meddle in their choices to aid Palestine or protect themselves.
The group known as Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which is supported by Iran, released a statement on Monday claiming responsibility for attacking a U.S. garrison in al-Tanf, near the U.S. Tower 22 base that was also attacked over the weekend. They also targeted two other U.S. bases in the area and an oil facility belonging to Israel.
The three American service members who were killed have been named as Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, 46, from Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, from Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, from Savannah, Georgia.
President Biden called the attack “despicable and wholly unjust,” vowing that the U.S. “will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”
