The leaning tower in an Italian city prepares for potential collapse.
The city of Bologna in Italy is getting ready for the potential collapse of one of its famous towers, which was constructed over 900 years ago, due to its significant tilt.
The Garisenda tower, paired with the nearby Asinelli tower, is a famous landmark in Bologna, reaching a height of approximately 150 feet.
However, the tilt of the building has been evident since the 14th century. During this time, the upper 32 feet of the structure were taken down in an effort to prevent further instability.
In October, the local government made the decision to enclose the vicinity of the tower as a safety precaution for the public. They also planned to construct a framework to safeguard nearby structures in case the tower collapses.
According to a city spokesperson, a recent report from experts has indicated that the tower is in danger of collapsing. Therefore, we must prepare for any potential outcome.
The tower is currently tilted at a 4 degree angle, which is slightly less than the famous Tower of Pisa’s 5 degree angle. The local authorities have performed extensive maintenance to uphold the tower’s structural stability throughout the years.
Local media reported that experts have been worried about the stability of the tower since 2022. However, in October 2023, sensor data indicated significant movements in the ancient structure, leading to alarms and the immediate closure of the surrounding area. Traffic on nearby roads was also temporarily stopped.
There is currently no unanimous agreement on the timeline for the tower’s collapse, whether it will happen soon or far in the future.
