Elton John has achieved EGOT status on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
Elton John’s variety special “Farewell From Dodger Stadium” won an award for outstanding variety special (live) on Monday night.
John is the 19th individual to achieve the distinction of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award. The vocalist has been awarded five Grammys.
John was unable to attend the Emmy Awards on Monday night to receive his win due to his ongoing recovery from a knee surgery. However, his partner David Furnish was present at the event and shared John’s response to receiving the award with the audience.
The Hollywood Reporter shared a video.
Ben Winston, one of the producers of the special, accepted the award on the singer’s behalf. Winston said John “wanted to send his love and thanks.”
According to Winston, we were aware that this performance would be significant since it marked Elton’s final show in North America on his tour. Additionally, we knew it would be a momentous occasion as it was Disney’s inaugural live global stream. However, we were not anticipating the historical significance it would hold as it resulted in the achievement of an EGOT for a man who has composed the soundtrack to our lives and contributed greatly to society, making him a hero to us all.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey presented the award.
“Now, I can’t speak for Elton, but ‘EGOT’ to be excited about that,” Poehler quipped.
