The founder and lead vocalist of the renowned reggae group Morgan Heritage, Peter Anthony Morgan, passed away at the age of 46 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time and expressed gratitude for the love and support they have received. The official statement shared on social media did not disclose the reason for his death.
Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, expressed his sorrow on social media regarding the news of Morgan’s passing. He referred to it as a tremendous loss for both Jamaica and the reggae music industry.
Morgan, also known by the nickname “Peetah,” was one of the children of the famous Jamaican reggae artist Denroy Morgan. In 1994, Morgan and his siblings came together to create the band Morgan Heritage, which went on to win a Grammy Award for best reggae album in 2016 with their album “Strictly Roots.”
A message on social media expressed shock and sadness upon hearing of Morgan’s passing.
Morgan’s sibling, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, relocated to Tennessee with the goal of bringing reggae music to Nashville.
In a 2018 interview with The Associated Press, Morgan stated that both reggae and country music have a strong emphasis on storytelling. He noted that reggae often focuses on the struggles and hardships faced by people.
Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan were among the other siblings who assisted in establishing the band.
