These individuals are known as sidemen or back-up performers, and they are often called upon when the main stars are not present. Despite not being in the spotlight, they possess a strong understanding of their role and talent, and remain humble while still being able to shine. Journalist Jim Axelrod interviews three examples of these types of performers: Mark Rivera, a sideman for Billy Joel; Erik Kratz, a catcher who has played for numerous major league teams; and Kayla Pecchioni, a Broadway understudy who often fills in for lead roles.
