A large collection of ancient skulls and bones were discovered piled on top of each other during a construction project in Mexico.
Researchers excavating a location in Mexico discovered ancient bones and skulls placed in a vertical arrangement, providing insight into the burial customs of the time and area, according to officials.
According to a news release from the INAH, personnel from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, a government agency, discovered artifacts while monitoring the construction of a sewage network in Pozo de Ibarra, a small town in Jalisco. This was done in order to preserve any cultural relics that may be uncovered during the project.
As the project progressed, the team of archaeologists unearthed a burial arrangement consisting of a grid of bones that were meticulously positioned. Particularly, longer bones such as tibias and femurs were neatly grouped together, while skulls were found in a separate section. Remarkably, some of the skulls were even layered on top of each other.
The INAH stated that a minimum of seven intact skulls were discovered by researchers. It is believed that each skull belonged to a male individual, with varying ages. Some of the skulls exhibit signs of cranial modification, a cultural tradition of shaping the skull for aesthetic reasons.
