In the latter part of 2023, Pakistan initiated a contentious initiative to remove Afghan refugees without proper documentation, causing concerns for marginalized refugees, such as Laila Khan and Jannat, two transgender women who spoke with CBS News while residing at a guesthouse in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

According to human rights organizations, numerous Afghan refugees identifying as transgender have fled to Pakistan for safety, with an estimated 50 individuals already seeking legal protection through the courts in Peshawar.
