When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Sunday

He announced that he would be halting his campaign.

During his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, he shared a quote on X and credited former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as its source. The quote stated, “Success is not permanent, failure is not fatal; it is the determination to persevere that matters.”

There was only one issue: Churchill did not utter those words.

“The Winston Churchill Project at Hillsdale College in Michigan has noted the proliferation of fake quotes attributed to Winston Churchill, a trend that has been exacerbated by the internet,” stated the project. They identified the quote used by DeSantis as one of two examples of “aspirational phrases” falsely attributed to Churchill.

He published a response to an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that mistakenly credited the quote to Churchill.

The Society stated that their conclusion was based on thorough research of fifty million words from Churchill’s canon, which includes his books, articles, speeches, and papers.

CBS News has made contact with the DeSantis campaign, but has not received a response yet.
