Russian cyber attackers have been accused of carrying out a spear phishing scheme aimed at the United States intelligence community.

The Justice Department accused Russian hackers of carrying out a complex cyber attack on US intelligence personnel, including contractors working for the State and Defense Departments. It was part of a larger operation involving NATO allies and Ukraine.

The prosecution alleged that a member of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and another individual colluded to engage in a spear phishing scheme from October 2016 to October 2022 targeting both current and former workers of the U.S. intelligence sector, as well as defense contractors and Energy Department installations.

According to a recently released federal indictment in California, Ruslan Aleksandrovich Peretyatko and Andrey Stanislavovich Korinets, who are members of the Callisto Group, are accused of using fake email accounts to deceive victims into giving away their login information and gaining access to their email accounts. Both individuals are identified as FSB officers.
