The White House and Justice Department have revealed a new strategy to safeguard personal information against China and Russia.

The White House announced on Wednesday that the Biden administration plans to introduce regulations in order to assist the Justice Department in preventing data brokers from selling personal information of Americans to countries that are deemed concerning.

President Biden is issuing an executive order that will for the first time propose guardrails that shield bulk biometric and healthcare data and financial information collected by businesses inside the U.S. and that are aimed at preventing the material from being transferred to foreign adversaries, including China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela and North Korea. The data — including genomic and geolocation information — are collected by tech companies and sold by legal means to data brokers but can eventually make their way to scammers and intelligence agencies abroad.

On Wednesday, authorities announced rules that are intended to hinder this from occurring. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the presidential decree will grant the Department of Justice with the power to prohibit nations that put our national security at risk from collecting the most sensitive personal information of Americans.
