Riley, a student studying nursing at Augusta University’s Athens campus, previously attended the larger Athens campus of the University of Georgia. Tragically, she was discovered deceased on Thursday after her roommate notified authorities that she had not returned from a morning jog in the wooded region near the intramural fields on the University of Georgia campus.

On Monday afternoon, a large group of students and faculty came together for a memorial service in honor of Riley, arranged by her fellow sorority members at the University of Georgia. There were tears and the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega carried carnations, representing their sorority.

Chloe Mullis, the president of the University of Georgia’s Alpha Chi Omega chapter, stated that Laken exhibited unwavering commitment in all facets of her life. She refused to do anything half-heartedly. Her passing has left us without one of the most radiant individuals we have ever known.

According to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Ibarra was apprehended by the Border Patrol on September 8, 2022 after crossing the border from Mexico near El Paso, Texas. ICE reports that he was released for additional review. It is uncertain if Ibarra requested asylum.

ICE reported that Ibarra was taken into custody by the New York police on August 31st. He was charged with injuring a child under 17 and violating motor vehicle licensing laws. However, Ibarra was released before ICE could request that New York officials detain him until immigration authorities could take over. On Sunday, New York officials stated that they have no record of Ibarra’s arrest.

The White House extended their sympathies to Riley’s family and directed inquiries about the situation to ICE and the authorities in the area.

In a statement, Gonzalez stated that she has chosen attorney Sheila Ross for the role, noting her extensive experience and reputation as a skilled trial lawyer who is prepared to seek justice for Laken Riley.
