On Saturday, flags will be lowered to half-staff as a sign of honor for the late former first lady, Rosalynn Carter. She was the wife of former President Jimmy Carter.

Which person passed away in the past seven days?

At the age of 96, she was diagnosed with dementia in May of this year.

“Throughout her life as First Lady of Georgia and First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter exemplified hope, warmth, and a steadfast commitment to doing all she could to address many of our society’s greatest needs,” said President Biden in a proclamation Monday, adding that Carter also fought for equal rights for women, was a mental health advocate and a supporter of “the often and unseen and uncompensated” caregivers of children, the elderly and those with disabilities.

Biden stated that the strong bond between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter epitomizes partnership, and their modest leadership embodies patriotism.

“Consistently over our decades-long friendship, even in the midst of challenging campaigns and moments of intense grief, we have always found solace, positivity, and encouragement in the presence of Rosalynn Carter,” stated the post on social media, accompanied by a picture of the previous first lady.

“We will always hold her in our hearts.”
