The collapse of the immigration agreement erases four months of talks that were initiated by Republicans who objected to providing additional assistance to Ukraine before securing the U.S.-Mexico border. On Sunday, a group of three senators unveiled their proposal, which included several compromises that Republican legislators have been requesting for a long time.

The proposal received strong backlash from House Republicans and ex-President Donald Trump, who holds considerable influence over GOP members. With the exception of four GOP senators, the majority voted against the border agreement, resulting in a failed 49-50 vote. A small number of Democrats also expressed opposition to the proposal.
